Variety Details
Strelitzia reginae (Orange)
The classic Bird of Paradise with vibrant orange and blue crane-shaped flowers and compact blue-green paddle leaves. The most common variety for indoor growing.
Distinguishing feature: Orange and blue flowers; compact 3–5 foot size; blue-green banana-like leaves
Care notes: Most manageable size for indoors. Flowers more readily than the white variety when given enough light.
Strelitzia nicolai (White/Giant)
A much larger species with white and blue flowers and enormous leaves that can reach 6 feet long. Grows into a true indoor tree over time.
Distinguishing feature: White and blue flowers; much larger size (6–15+ feet); enormous dark green leaves; tree-like trunk
Care notes: Needs significantly more space than reginae. Requires very bright light. More commonly sold as a houseplant despite its size. Won't flower indoors without exceptional light.
Strelitzia juncea (Rush Leaf)
A unique variety with narrow, rush-like leaves instead of the typical broad paddles. Produces the same orange and blue flowers but with a distinctly different foliage texture.
Distinguishing feature: Narrow, cylindrical rush-like leaves instead of broad paddles; same orange and blue flowers
Care notes: Same care as standard reginae. More drought-tolerant due to reduced leaf surface area. Rare and harder to find.
Strelitzia Mandela's Gold
A rare yellow-flowered cultivar with golden yellow and blue flowers instead of the typical orange. Developed in South Africa and named in honor of Nelson Mandela.
Distinguishing feature: Golden yellow and blue flowers instead of orange; same compact form as reginae
Care notes: Same care as standard reginae. Rare and expensive. The yellow flowers are stunning but the plant is otherwise identical in care needs.
